Road closes in both directions after lorry overturns and spills its cargo

A key route in Rhondda Cynon Taf has closed after a lorry overturned and spilled its cargo onto the road. South Wales Police said its officers were at the scene of the crash on the A4233 Maerdy Road between Maerdy and Aberdare on Thursday afternoon. In a tweet at 4.19pm on Thursday, the force said: "Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.

Delays are expected in the area." Rhondda Cynon Taf Council confirmed that the road will be shut until Friday at 4pm so the area can be cleared. A spokesperson said on Friday: "The A4233 Maerdy Mountain Road remains CLOSED for the recovery of an overturned vehicle and its cargo. The road will remain CLOSED until the previously planned opening at 4pm this afternoon."
